Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need travel protection?
Travel Insurance covers unforeseen circumstances that may occur before or during your trip. It can protect you from losing your monetary investment if you have to cancel your trip within the penalty period where travel suppliers and tour operators keep your non-refundable deposits. It also provides coverage for other problems that you may face during your trip, such as lost, stolen, or damaged baggage, reimbursement of medical expenses and expenses incurred to evacuate you back to your home and more.
How can travel insurance help me?
Travel insurance covers risks incidental to planned travel such as trip interruption, trip delay, trip cancellation, and damaged or lost luggage. You can purchase Travel Protection to help protect yourself in case unexpected events negatively impact your travel plans.
Due to time sensitive provisions that can apply to certain benefits, certain covered reasons, and/or the pre-existing condition exclusion waiver, we recommend you purchase your plan very soon after making your initial trip payment or deposit.
To understand exactly what the plan can cover and what it won’t, you must read your chosen plan carefully. If there is a problem and you need to file a claim, you’ll have to provide documentation of your issue, such as receipts, rental agreements or police reports. Like other forms of insurance, Travel Insurance works on a reimbursement basis. That means you may incur certain costs up front and then be reimbursed by the insurer once they’ve covered your claim.
When is a beneficial time to buy travel protection?
You must purchase the plan within the time sensitive period to be eligible for certain highlights. For example, if the plan is purchased within the time sensitive period from initial trip deposit, you can be eligible for the Pre-Existing Conditions Exclusions Waiver. (Additional terms apply). Optional CFAR is also subject to the time sensitive period, allowing you a certain amount of days to purchase the optional buy-up. (Additional cost and terms apply. Not available in NY).
What is the latest date I can purchase travel protection for my trip?
The standard plan is available for purchase from the time of booking up to 30 days prior to the start date of your trip.
If you are booking within 30 days of your trip, you can still purchase standard travel protection as long as it is purchased at time of booking; however, you cannot purchase the standard travel protection on the date you depart for your scheduled trip.
Travel protection with the Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR) benefit is only available for purchase within the time sensitive period of your initial trip deposit payment. CFAR is not available for purchase for trips booked within 30 days of your scheduled trip departure date (the date you depart for your travel destination).
For maximum protection, it is recommended that travel protection be purchased at the time of making the first payment toward any part of the scheduled trip. If you wait too long to purchase your plan, certain offerings may not apply, or you may become ineligible to purchase certain plans. The travel protection does not apply to events that occur or become foreseeable prior to purchase date. Also, the pre-existing medical condition exclusion can be waived if the protection is purchased within the time sensitive period. (Additional terms apply; see plan document.)
If I have already departed for my trip, can I still buy travel protection to protect it?
No, you cannot purchase travel protection once you have already departed for your scheduled trip.
How is standard travel protection different from the CANCEL FOR ANY REASON plan?
Standard travel protection provides 100% reimbursement up to the specified maximum benefit amount for 30+ different circumstances that may cause you to cancel or interrupt your travel plans. These circumstances are wide ranging and include things like illness, weather, accidents, death of family member, job change, jury duty, travel delays and more. Please refer to your plan document for specific terms, conditions, and limitations.
Travel Protection with the optional Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR) benefit adds reimbursement if you cancel for a reason not listed as covered by the standard plan. (Terms apply; see plan document.) The CFAR benefit can be claimed prior to departure for any reason not otherwise covered by the plan, provided the following conditions are met:
- The Cancel for Any Reason Benefit is purchased within the Time Sensitive Period; and
- The covered Trip is cancelled by the named insured no later than 48 hours prior to the Scheduled Departure Date of the covered Trip.
This Optional Cancel for Any Reason Benefit does not cover the failure of the retail Travel Supplier to provide the bargained-for Travel Arrangements due to cessation of operations for any reason. Programs with the CFAR plan are not available to residents of New York.
How can I view a sample plan before I purchase?
Simply click on your resident state in the grid above. You can view in your browser or download a copy. Eligibility rules apply; viewing a sample plan is not a guarantee of coverage or eligibility for coverage.
What would be considered the Initial Trip Payment Date?
The Initial Trip Payment date is the date on which the cash, check or credit card amounts actually paid for your travel arrangements. Certificates, vouchers, discounts and/or credits applied (in part or in full) towards the cost of Your Travel Arrangements are not Payments or Deposits as defined in the travel protection plan.
I have a pre-existing medical condition. How will the plan respond?
A Pre-Existing Medical Condition, as defined in the plan is excluded unless purchase is made within the time sensitive period.
Per the plan, the insurer will waive the Pre-Existing Medical Condition exclusion if all of the following conditions are met:
a. Your payment for this plan and enrollment form is received within the Time Sensitive Period; and
b. You or Your Traveling Companion, are medically able and not disabled from travel at the time Your premium is paid based on assessment of a Physician.
In order for coverage to apply, you must then have a covered claim under another portion of the plan. For more details, click on your resident state in the grid above. You can view in your browser or download a copy. Eligibility rules apply; viewing a sample plan is not a guarantee of coverage or eligibility for coverage.
Am I covered if I cancel my trip due to terrorism?
You can be covered if during your trip, a Terrorist Attack occurs within the radius specified in the plan document of a city at which you are scheduled to arrive, or if a Terrorist Attack occurs within 30 days of your scheduled trip departure date in a city to which you are scheduled to travel. Losses resulting from cancelling due to a potential attack are not covered.
