Below is guidance from Old Republic Insurance Company of Canada, underwriter of Play Travel Canada.
On March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization declared the COVID-19 outbreak as a global pandemic.
Old Republic Canada travel insurance policies provide trip cancellation, interruption and delay coverage related to events that are unforeseen at the time of purchase. In addition, the policies contain an exclusion for events that might cause a cancelled trip for which a purchaser had knowledge of at time of purchase.
Effective March 12, 2020, Old Republic Canada considers COVID-19 to be a known event. Therefore, trip cancellation, interruption and delay coverage will not be available for events related to COVID-19 for policies purchased or trip values increased on or after March 12. This exclusion applies to all trip destinations. Policies purchased and trip value increases prior to March 12 are not impacted by this notice.
For policy purchases or trip value increases on or after March 12, trip cancellation, interruption and delay benefits are still available for events unrelated to COVID-19. In addition, emergency medical benefits are available for travel to destinations for which there is no Government of Canada Level 3 or 4 Travel Advisory. However, no medical coverage is available for trips that include a cruise.
